Deoghar is a sleepy city located on the main Howrah Delhi main railway line in the state of Jharkhand. Deoghar is mainly famous for its Shiva temple (Dham) which is known as Baidyanath Dham. However, there are other places of historical importance as well – which tourists find interesting. Simultala is located very close to Deoghar, probably the next station. This place was famous at a time when people of Bengal used to go there for holidays due to the good weather and pollution-free environment. This blog of mine mainly focuses on the best places to visit in Deoghar and Simultala. You can visit these places by hiring a taxi service in Deoghar and can explore these places.
Although there is no direct train line to Deoghar, it can be reached by getting down at Jasidih Junction, from where auto-rickshaws and taxis are available to this temple town.
Deoghar is first mentioned in modern history about 200 years ago when this place was covered with dense forests. Around 1870, the place was notified by the British Government, and the Deoghar Court was established. The place has 3 areas, namely Williams Town, Castor Town, and Bompas Town, named after the first 3 British Commissioners of the region. Around 1920, the place began to develop, when forests were cleared to make way for civilization. Since then the city has grown to a great extent. Being an old town, innumerable narrow streets and by-lanes can be found crossing each other.
Best Places to visit in Deoghar and Simultala
The main attraction of Deoghar, Baidyanath Temple, is situated inside a nearly 89 feet high boundary wall. There are a total of 22 temples of different sizes in this complex, the center of which is the Shiva temple. No one can tell when this temple has stood here and by whom it was built. Some people claim it to be a thousand years old, some even more. An ancient myth is that Lord Vishwakarma (the god of engineers) himself built the temple on the instructions of Lord Narayana. The temple and its surrounding areas are mentioned in the ancient Puranas (books of Hindu mythology) around 600 BCE. Inside the Shiva temple is a Shiva linga which is held in very high esteem by the Hindus.
Located about 6 KM from Deoghar, Tapoban is a must-visit place for all travelers. Tapoban is basically one of the many small hills located in and around Deoghar. The place was once covered with dense forests, as was most of Deoghar. But now all that is lost. There are many caves at the top of the hill. According to the local people, Balananda Brahmachari was sitting in a cave for his meditation and it was here that he attained enlightenment.
Nandan Pahar is definitely on the list of top 10 places to visit in Deoghar. It is a medium-sized hill located about 5 km from Deoghar, offering spectacular views of the surrounding from the top. Jasidih-Dumka rail head can be seen from above. There is a reservoir at the foot of Nandan mountain which supplies water to the entire Deoghar city. Other attractions of Nandan Pahar are some hundred years old temples and a small amusement park.
It is arguably the highest among all the hills in and around Deoghar. It is covered with dense forests on all sides and also houses a Shiva temple built in 1933. Trikatu Pahar is located on Deoghar-Dumka Highway and is about 18 KM from the city.
Also known as Jugal Mandir, it is located about 1.5 KM away from the city center. Constructed of white marble, this 146 feet temple was constructed in 1948. In those days, the total construction cost of the temple was Rs 9 lakh, hence the name (9 => nine; lakh-> lakh). Inside the temple is the position of Lord Radha-Krishna with His Holiness Balananda Brahmachari (who was the guru of Charushila Rani, the woman who built the temple). The entire temple is surrounded by a huge lawn and has a pond (Narmada Kund) in its east. This temple is a must-visit among all the attractions of Deoghar
Navadurga Temple (Devsangh)
Devsangh Ashram is located about 2 km away from the city and has a very pleasant atmosphere around it. The Navadurga temple was built by Shri Narendranath Brahmachari and has an idol of him.
Located in the center of the city is the Tower Clock, a massive structure with a large clock on top. This tower clock serves as a landmark of the city. The main fame of Deoghar is due to Baidyanath Dham Temple, which is more than a thousand years old temple. The temple tower is about 500 meters away from the clock and has to be reached through narrow streets.
